Excess Mucus And Runny Nose
- Half inch flat piece of cinnamon, break it into bits, boil with 150 ml water for 10 mins. Strain, cool and sweeten with honey. Twice a day. (highly effective in breaking down the mucus and getting relief from runny nose or sore throat)
- Food like garlic, ginger, onion are helpful in breaking down the mucus.
- Honey water or plain honey is also very effective.
- Camomile tea.
- Dry Fig with Almond and Walnut - This rids a patient of a chronic and stubborn cough (Canon of Medicine by Abu Ali Sina, Vol -3)
Constipation
- Addition of foods like - Prunes, Figs are helpful
- Drink adequate amount of water, do not gulp water, drink slowly in sips.
- Chew your food well.
- Avoid sugar and sugary foods. (only take 1-2 sips of sherbat for salawaat)
- Avoid processed and fast foods.
- Use of Senna Powder/Senna tea is effective in relieving constipation (must be done under expert or medical supervision)
- walking, exercis or other physical activitiy is beneficial.
Diarrhea
- A person came to Imam Jaferussadiq SA and complaied of lose motion. Imam SA advised him to take Rice Flour with water. On doing it, he was relieved from motion.
(NOTE: If diarrhea is chronic or due to bacterial infection, then appropriate medications must be taken under medical supervision)
- Rest or sleeping is extremely beneficial (Canon of Medicine by Abu Ali Sina, Vol 3)
- Minimize or avoid liquids.
- Yogurt and rice are helpful.
Cough with Mucus
- One inch chopped ginger soaked in a cup of water for five hours, strain water, add two teaspoons of honey - have it twice a day.
- Ginger juice with a tablespoon honey : 2-3 times a day

- Miminize consumption of food. (fasting is beneficial to stop excess mucus and cough)

Precautions in Hot Weather
Guidelines for Hot weather mentioned in Canon of Medicine - Vol 1
- Digestive power in hot weather is weaker.
- Avoid overeating. Prefer eating light foods.
- Keep yourself well hydrated.
- Rosewater is beneficial in cooling.
- Keep the head well covered and protect it from heat.
Benefit of Eating Onion when traveling
Baqir Imam SA states:
When you enter a place which is affected by epidemic disease, eating onions grown in that region protects you from that epidemic.
- Onions are helpful during travelling as there is change of weather, air quality and water.
- Onions help in eliminating mucus and cleaning the intestines.
Throat & voice care for Zakereen
- Imam Jaferussadiq SA: Eat olives, it removes the dryness of the throat.
- Ibn Sina in The Canon of Medicine mentions:
~ Someone whose voice has become harsh needs to avoid anything that is sour, salty, rough, or pungent tasting.
~ They need to consume moisturizing foods such as chicken broth, or other simple broths (soups) made from vegetables or beans. Boiled barley water is helpful. Eating Figs is helpful.
~ For roughness of voice: raisins or raisin water mixed with honey. (can even gargle with this water)
~ The main sender of voice matter is the Lungs. (Breath control and mindful diaphragmatic breathing are helpful)

- Optimum hydration: Consume at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
- In case of swelling in the throat: Turmeric and salt water gargle. A teaspoon of Honey with ginger and lime juice (Honey has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for coughs, colds, and sore throats)
- AVOID: Ice-cold water, food colors and processed foods, heavy or oily foods, and overeating.
- Honey water before and after recitation.
- Thyme tea helps soothe a sore throat. Or tea with ginger, turmeric and thyme (can add honey and lemon)
- Keep the dinner light and simple. Avoid eating late at night.
- Breath control exercises to increase lung capacity.
